Vascular Care at NJ Spine and Wellness

At NJ Spine And Wellness, Our Team Of Vein Specialists Can Help You Effectively And Efficiently Treat Your Varicose And Spider Veins.

Your veins serve the vital function of carrying oxygen-rich blood to the heart to maintain optimal biological processes. Over time, the valves in your veins can become damaged, and your veins can get twisted and enlarged, leading to a condition known as varicose veins. While varicose veins are not typically cause for concern, they can lead to more severe problems, such as:

  • Difficulties with blood flow
  • Aching and cramping
  • Swelling
  • Unsightly appearance

Varicose veins can occur anywhere within the body, but they are most commonly experienced in the legs. Fortunately, the vein specialists at NJ Spine and Wellness can help efficiently treat your varicose and spider veins.

What are the Risk Factors for Varicose and Spider Veins?

The most common risk factors of varicose and spider veins include:

  • Gender: due to female hormones, women are more likely than men to develop these conditions
  • Genes: if your family members have varicose or spider veins, you could experience them as well
  • Age: your veins weaken as they age, increasing the risk of developing these conditions, usually after the age of 40
  • Occupation: a job that requires constant sitting or standing can heighten your risk for varicose and spider veins
  • Medical history: if you have already experienced deep vein thrombosis or another type of blood clot, you could be at risk for varicose and spider veins since your veins are not as strong as they once were
  • Birth control: medications with female hormones can contribute to developing these conditions
  • Weight: overweight and obese individuals are more likely to develop varicose and spider veins due to excess pressure on the veins

Is There A Way To Get Rid Of Varicose Veins Naturally?

Since varicose veins aren’t always a serious medical condition, there are a few ways to treat them naturally. However, you should always consult with your provider before making any changes to your diet or exercise routine.

Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are designed to apply pressure to the lower legs, promoting circulation and diminishing swelling. Increased blood flow can help alleviate varicose veins and reduce discomfort.

Pain Medications

You can manage pain and discomfort from varicose veins with over-the-counter NSAIDs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

Exercise

Following a sedentary lifestyle can make it significantly more difficult for your veins to adequately pump blood back to your heart. To treat varicose or spider veins, try incorporating regular exercise into your daily routine to promote circulation, lower blood pressure, and alleviate pressure on your veins.

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

When patients are overweight or obese, excess pressure can exacerbate varicose veins. By maintaining a healthy weight, it can help mitigate varicose and spider veins.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Anti-inflammatory foods, such as omega-3 antioxidants and magnesium-rich foods, can help strengthen the veins and contribute to healthy circulation.

If your varicose veins continue after these lifestyle changes, it may be time to consult with an NJ Spine and Wellness varicose vein specialist for suggestions on other treatment options.

What is the Best Treatment for Varicose and Spider Veins?

Typically, the two best treatments have been sclerotherapy and radiofrequency vein ablation (RFA):

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that involves injecting a chemical solution into the veins to cause them to collapse. The purpose of sclerotherapy is to reroute blood to healthier veins, relieving varicose and spider veins. After your sclerotherapy procedure, you will be able to resume your normal activities on the same day, but you should avoid strenuous activities for about two weeks.

Radiofrequency Vein Ablation

RFA is a procedure utilized to reduce the occurrence of varicose and spider veins. During this procedure, a small probe is inserted into your vein. The probe then emits radiofrequency waves to heat the nearby tissues, sealing damaged veins and redirecting blood flow to healthier veins.

RFA is generally performed in an outpatient setting and requires no general anesthesia. Since a numbing agent is administered, it is a virtually painless and safe procedure that may reduce or eliminate your varicose or spider veins. The recovery period is quite fast, as most patients are able to resume their normal activities within five to seven days.
