From sports injuries and accidents to aging and degeneration, hand pain may occur for numerous reasons. The NJ Spine and Wellness team is well-equipped to treat a wide variety of hand and wrist conditions to help you get better faster. Before beginning any treatment, your provider will examine your hand to determine the cause of your pain.

Causes of Hand & Wrist Pain

Hand and wrist pain may be caused by underlying diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It may also be caused by a sprain or strain, an overuse injury, disuse, and trauma. Common causes of hand and wrist pain include:

Fractures

If you break a bone, you will feel a lot of pain in your hand. You may also experience swelling, stiffness, and restricted movement. If you have a fractured finger or if you have broken a bone at your wrist joint and are not able to move your hand or wrist normally, then you need to get urgent medical care.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a nerve disorder that causes tingling, pain, numbness, and irritation in the hand and fingers. Those with carpal tunnel syndrome may also have difficulty grasping and holding objects.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by repetitive motion, pressure on the wrist, or certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

De Quervain’s Tendinitis

This condition typically causes pain in the thumb side of the wrist and can make it difficult to clench your fist, turn your wrist, or grasp objects. While the exact cause of De Quervain’s tendinitis is unknown, repetitive hand and wrist motions may cause this condition to become worse.

Arthritis

Arthritis can cause the cartilage in your joints to wear out. As a result, the bones produce a painful feeling when they move against each other, causing swelling at the joint. Progressive wearing-out of cartilage can occur due to aging, a fracture, or a dislocation.
