5 Common Illnesses In Men
In honor of Men’s Health Month and Fathers Day, we want to look out for the all boys and men in our lives. Here are 5 treatable health illnesses common in men that you should be looking out for.
Heart Disease – Heart disease (or cardiovascular disease) is the number one killer in the country. Risk factors that can affect the development of heart disease significantly are high blood pressure, obesity, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet and high cholesterol. Staying active, eating healthy and monitoring your blood pressure can help reduce the risk. Always consult your cardiologist.
Prostate Cancer – Prostate cancer is a slow developing disease that can go unrecognizable for several years. It is the most common cancer in men. Symptoms can include frequent urinating or difficulty and discomfort when doing so, blood in urine, and pain in thighs, hips or lower back. While factors such as family history and genetics are uncontrollable, you can lower your risk of prostate cancer with a low fat diet, adding omega-3s, and exercising regularly.
Diabetes – Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which cells cannot use blood sugar (glucose) efficiently for energy. This occurs when blood sugar levels get too high over time, and the cells become insensitive or resistant to insulin. Symptoms may include abnormal fatigue, blurred vision, sores that don’t heal, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. Controlling your diabetes can be done with medication, but a healthy diet and physical activity can help keep your blood sugar leveled.
Depression – This mental health illness is commonly overlooked amongst men. Symptoms may include loss or change in appetite, withdrawing from friends and family, lack of focus at work, retreating from enjoyed activities, feelings of guilt, difficulty concentrating and constant feeling of sadness. The good news is that there are many outlets to help combat depression. Things such as exercising, participating in different hobbies such as yoga or sports, eating right and talking to a therapist can go a long way. Do not be afraid to seek help!
